The Right Experience

Chief Deputy District Attorney Matt Lee is the only candidate for Sparks Justice of the Peace with the right experience.  He has gained a reputation as being TOUGH, BUT FAIR. As a public servant, Matt has fought his entire career for the safety of our Sparks community. Matt has personally prosecuted over 100 bench trials and dozens of jury trials ranging from stalking, DUI causing death, and armed robbery to murder and rape. Matt’s experience as a prosecutor brings him enormous insight that would serve the community well as a Justice of the Peace.

Meet Matt

Matt comes from old-fashioned, pioneer stock. His Nevada roots date back six generations to the early settlement of the state. Those Nevada qualities of hard work and dedication were instilled in Matt from an early age. Matt started off as a young teenager working the drive-thru window at a fast-food restaurant and worked throughout college and then law school while raising young children.

Following his graduation from law school in Ohio, Matt secured a position with Washoe County District Court Judge David Hardy, where he drafted the court’s orders and gained invaluable insight and experience into the workings of the law and judiciary. Following this, Matt was hired by Dick Gammick as a Deputy District Attorney for Washoe County. Matt began prosecuting primarily misdemeanor cases of DUI and Domestic Battery, conducting over 100 trials in the Justice Courts on behalf of the State of Nevada. Soon, Matt was advanced into the felony units, where he prosecuted heavier and more challenging crimes that have a significant impact on the community. During this time Matt also gained specialized training and experience in prosecuting arson cases. In 2016, Matt was promoted to the murder team, handling complex homicide cases in addition to his regular felony caseload. This team responds to crime scenes 24 hours a day to assist in the early stages of an investigation and sees the case through to trial.

In January 2019, Matt was appointed as Chief Deputy District Attorney, wherein he oversees the training and prosecutions of a team of felony-level prosecutors while maintaining his own murder and arson caseload.  Matt has always found great satisfaction working with victims, law enforcement and the community in holding people accountable for their crimes.

Matt is a family man. He and his wife, Adrienne, have been married for over 20 years. They are parents of six children, all of whom have attended local Sparks public schools, with the oldest in college and the youngest in kindergarten.

Notable cases Matt has personally prosecuted:

- Secured a life sentence for a man who beat a woman to death at a local casino hotel

- April 2022 trial ending with a guilty verdict and life sentence for a man who viciously stomped his girlfriend to death

- Guilty verdict at trial with a life sentence for man who shot and killed his sister-in-law

- Supreme Court upheld conviction for rape following a trial where man was found guilty of sexually assaulting a complete stranger outside a local casino hotel

Notable Community Service:

- Appointed by Commissioner Vaughn Hartung and served for four years as a member of the Spanish Springs Community Advisory Board

- Coached and judged the Nevada high school mock trial program for years

- Instructor at the Northern Nevada Law Enforcement Academy (police academy for Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County recruits) for over 10 years on criminal procedure

- Instructor for over 10 years at the Nevada State Police (Highway Patrol) academy

- Instructed judges from across the country at the National Judicial College on DUI and traffic crime trends
